Fact check: the Vedanta-Foxconn chip venture is dead and is not a live Dholera project

10 July 2026Confirmed
The update

The Vedanta-Foxconn chip and display joint venture signed an MoU in September 2022 and never got built; Foxconn withdrew on 10 July 2023. Any current listing presenting a live Vedanta-Foxconn Dholera fab is recycling a stale claim. The real fab in Dholera is Tata Electronics, cleared by the Cabinet in February 2024 and under construction in 2026.

One of the most persistent myths in Dholera search results is that a Vedanta-Foxconn semiconductor project is coming to the city. It is not. That joint venture collapsed in 2023, and the active fab in Dholera today is the Tata Electronics project, a separate and confirmed effort.

The short version: Vedanta-Foxconn is history, not a plan. If you see it presented as an upcoming Dholera fab, the listing is out of date.

What actually happened to Vedanta-Foxconn

Vedanta and Foxconn signed a memorandum of understanding in September 2022 for a chip and display venture, with a headline joint-venture value of around US$19.5 billion. It was never built. Foxconn formally withdrew from the joint venture on 10 July 2023, ending the partnership. Any current listing that presents a live Vedanta-Foxconn Dholera fab, often attached to a large rupee figure, is recycling a stale, pre-2023 claim and should be ignored.

The fab that is real

The confirmed semiconductor anchor in Dholera is the Tata Electronics fab, cleared by the Union Cabinet on 29 February 2024 under the India Semiconductor Mission. It is built by Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited with technology from Taiwan's PSMC, at an approved investment of about Rs 91,000 crore, targeting up to 50,000 wafers per month. Civil work was reported near 50 percent complete in April 2026.

  • Vedanta-Foxconn: MoU September 2022, Foxconn exited 10 July 2023, never built. Not a live Dholera project.
  • Tata Electronics fab: Cabinet approval 29 February 2024, under construction through 2026. This is the real anchor.

We flag this because the two get conflated constantly, and buyers sometimes cite the dead venture as proof of momentum. The momentum is real, but it belongs to Tata, not to Vedanta-Foxconn.

Why the myth persists

The confusion has a simple cause. When the Vedanta-Foxconn plan was announced in 2022, it generated a wave of headlines pairing a very large investment figure with Gujarat and, in some coverage, Dholera. Those pages never fully left the internet, so search results and reshared listings still surface the old claim years after the partnership ended. If a listing quotes a big rupee number for a Vedanta-Foxconn Dholera fab, that number belongs to a venture that was never built and should not be treated as a live project. The one large chip investment that is actually being built in Dholera is Tata's, and its figures, an approximately Rs 91,000 crore fab targeting up to 50,000 wafers a month, are the ones worth citing.
