The semiconductor fab, the headline anchor
If Dholera is famous for one project, it is the Tata semiconductor fab, built by Tata Electronics with PSMC of Taiwan and approved by the Union Cabinet in February 2024 under the India Semiconductor Mission. At around Rs 91,000 crore, it is designed for up to 50,000 wafers a month and is the reason Dholera features in national headlines about making chips in India. Civil work was reported around 50 percent complete in mid-2026, with trial production targeted for December 2026, which we tag a target.
The solar park
Dholera is also known for clean energy. The Dholera solar park includes a Tata Power Renewables 300 MW plant online since April 2022, with an ultimate target of 5,000 MW that is a plan, not an installed figure. Together with the fab, it anchors Dholera's identity as an industrial and energy hub rather than a housing township.
The history behind the name
Long before the smart city, this coast entered the freedom struggle. The Dholera Satyagraha of April 1930 was a real salt-law civil-disobedience action at Dholera port after the Dandi march, with satyagrahis led by figures including Amritlal Seth and Balwantrai Mehta. Nearby, the Harappan dock at Lothal, about 40 km away and excavated in the 1950s, is often cited as the world's earliest known dock.
