Is the Tata semiconductor plant operational?
No. The Tata Electronics and PSMC semiconductor fab in Dholera is under construction, not operational. The plant is real and funded, but it is not yet running. This is one of the most confused points in Dholera coverage, partly because the project is genuinely large and partly because a dead, unrelated deal keeps polluting search results. So let us separate what is confirmed, what is targeted, and what is stale.
What is confirmed
The fab is a Tata Electronics and PSMC venture, approved by the Union Cabinet on 29 February 2024 under the India Semiconductor Mission, run through Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Pvt Ltd. The investment is Rs 91,000 crore, roughly US$11 billion, with the Fiscal Support Agreement signed on 5 March 2025 and the mission covering 50 percent of eligible cost. Planned capacity is up to 50,000 wafers a month on 300mm wafers, using PSMC technology with a debut 28nm node. In May 2026, Tata announced an ASML partnership to deploy lithography tools at the fab. All of that is confirmed.
What is still a target
The parts that would make it operational are targets. Civil construction was reported around 50 percent complete in April 2026, moving into cleanroom and equipment integration. First-chip trial production is targeted for December 2026, per the minister, and no source confirms a chip produced yet. The greater-than-20,000 jobs figure, and the multi-fab vision of around 100,000, are also targets. So the honest status is: physically rising, not yet producing.
Why the fab matters even before it opens
A Rs 91,000 crore facility under construction is already the anchor that gives the rest of Dholera its demand case. Read the full fab project page for the detail.
